Galaxy S7 is the latest flagship from Samsung. Currently Galaxy S7 devices are running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Google released Android 7.0 Nougat in August 2016. The Android 7.1.1 update has released by Google in December 2016. Actually the Search Giant started the beta program of Android 7.1.1 in October. Android 7.1.1 is a major update to Android 7.0 Nougat. In this update Google fixed many bugs which are present in Android Nougat. The new android update also improves stability of Nougat and also improves performance. On 30/01/2017, Google released the beta build of Android 7.1.2. In this update, Google addressed many bugs which are present in Android 7.1.1. In addition to bug fixes, a few new features have also added to Android with this update.

Elegant Features of Android 7.1.1 Nougat

1. Image Keyboard

Google launches a new set of emojis with pixel phones. Now these new emojis become available to other devices through the Image Keyboard in the Android 7.1.1 update. Actually this exclusive feature came with v5.2 update of Google Keyboard, but it requires Android 7.1+ API support. So new update facilitates users to send GIFs directly from keyboard through messengers apps like Google allo, hangouts etc. Users can also send images directly from keyboard through Messenger apps. The GIFs are all arranged in different categories like high five, yes, no, clapping, and so on. There is also a frequently used section and search box.

2. App Shortcuts on Home screen

The new update to Nougat brought additional home screen functions. Users can launch actions in apps on their home screens by simply long pressing. So that user can quickly jump into an excisting conversation in Google Messenger and also start new conversation directly from the home screen. In Google Music, also after long tap on the app, a menu with options like My library, My Playlists appears. So new app shortcuts feature makes home screen more user friendly. Actually this feature is already present in Windows Mobiles and iPhone devices, now it comes to Android through the update.

3. New Moves Menu in Settings

A new Moves menu has introduced in Setting Menu through the Android 7.1.1 update. By using this Moves menu, user can quickly open apps by gestures. To open Camera app, user only has to press the power button twice. When User lifts the phone, new notifications will appear on the screen.

4. Restart Button in Power Menu

In previous android versions, when user holds power button, power off option appears. But in Android 7.1.1, the Restart option appears, when user holds the power button. The power cycling is already present in Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel devices. Now this useful option is coming other devices through Android 7.1.1 update.

5. Improved Touch Latency

Already a Google Engineer told that touch latency will be improved in this update. So that device will response faster to touch than earlier android versions.

6. Smart Storage

Smart storage of Android 7.1.1 Nougat is an exclusive storage cleaning feature. So users don’t have to use other file managers and cleaners to free up storage. Smart storage can also clean the storage automatically. The Smart Storage option can be launched by going into Settings>Free up Space. There we can find three options : one for Photos, one videos older than 30 days and another for apps that haven’t used in 90 days. It don’t has option for cache cleaning. It can also automatically delete photos after they have backed up into Google Drive storage.

7. New Camera App

Google improved Camera app much better in Android 7.1.1 than in previous android revisons. New features like automatic Exposure, Viewfinder grid modes, Smart Burst and AE/FE locking are added. With these useful features, users can take pictures with more quality and also quickly.

8. Night Mode

Google introduced the Night Mode feature with Android Marshmallow. But in Android 6.0 it is present only on experimental purpose and can be found only in developers menu. In Android 7.1.1 Nougat Google refined the Night Mode feature as Night Light and released. But in older Nexus devices this night light feature is not working because of a hardware issue. In Pixel phones it is working perfectly so that some High-end flagship devices may get the Night Light feature with Android 7.1.1. Night Light feature works by adding slight red tint to Display to reduce blue light and there by eye strain in evening and night times.

9. New Live wallpaper Setting

In Android 7.1.2, Google introduced new live wallpaper setting. Through this setting, users can set different wallpapers for home screen and lockscreen. When user opened Google wallpapers apps like Live Earth, new options will appear as Home Screen, Home Screen and Lock Screen. So user can set live wallpaper for home screen and static wallpaper for lock screen. This new options for live wallpapers were not present in earlier android versions. So the Android 7.1.2 update brings a small but useful feature.

10. Swipe down on Fingerprint scanner to see Notifications

In Pixel and Pixel XL devices, this feature is already present but it reached Nexus 5X with the Android 7.1.2 update. In Android 7.1.2 this feature appears in the ‘Moves’ menu in Settings. After turning on the feature, user can see the new notifications by swiping down on the fingerprint sensor. Actually this feature arrived with Android 7.1 update but some devices like Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P didn’t get it.

According to the official change log of final release of Android 7.1.2, Google made many refinements to Fingerprint Gestures feature in excisting devices like Pixel. So swipe down on fingerprint sensor to see notifications feature is working more smoothly and reliably in Pixel and Pixel XL devices upgraded to Android 7.1.2.

So this improved fingerprint gestures feature may come to other devices through this update.

11. Battery usage alerts

Battery usage alerts is a new feature came with the Second beta build of Android 7.1.2 Nougat. Battery usage alerts option can be seen in the overflow menu of Battery Section in Settings. This new feature shows the apps which are draining battery more than regular. This list probably be empty if no apps are draining too much battery. This list will reset every time after full charge.

Although this is a small addition, it gives some information about the apps with heavy power usage and helps to save the battery. This may be refined in the Android 7.1.2 Final build and future android releases.

12. Bug Fixes

It is already known that Pixel and Nexus devices which have upgraded to Android 7.1.1 Nougat suffered from Bluetooth bug. But the Bluetooth bug and other bugs like occasional UI hangs are fixed in the Android 7.1.2 update. User interface is working fluid like in Android 7.1.2 Nougat with out hanging. Various security bugs are fixed in this update. Some Wi-Fi bugs are also fixed and the stability of Wi-Fi is improved.

Google also fixed early Shutdown bug in this update. Many Pixel users reported that the bug has gone and their devices are working perfectly. But some upgraded Pixel and Nexus 5X and 6P devices are showing quick battery drain and wrong battery calibration after updated to Android 7.1.2. Tech experts are saying that these issues will disappear automatically after a few days.

According to some reports, after updating to Android 7.1.1, some Pixel and Nexus users are facing In-car Bluetooth issues. They are having trouble in controlling their phones through In-car bluetooths. Google may fix this bug in the upcoming updates.

According to recent Google announcements, a fix for the In-Car bluetooth problems in Nexus 5X and Pixel devices will be released soon along with the next update. But the Search Giant has’nt revealed when the fix is coming.

Galaxy S7 was unveiled in February 2016 with inbuilt Android Marshmallow. Samsung rolled out the Android 7.0 Nougat update to unlocked Galaxy S7 devices in some regions but also later halted the rollout due to some bugs in the update. In February, Vodafone Carrier released Android Nougat for its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices. Recently Verizon also started the rollout of Android Nougat for its Galaxy S7 Devices. Still some carrier locked Samsung S7 devices are yet to receive the Nougat update.
